Landscape features and garden structures found in gardens across Columbus Ohio and area suburbs.
A proper garden feature should serve a practical function such as screening a view or providing seating as well as providing visual interest in the garden itself. Using natural materials helps ensure a lasting investment in your garden.

stone garden bench

sandstone bench

Materials: These garden benches are made out of various kinds of stone such as bluestone, granite, limestone and sandstone. Most of these materials are quarried in Ohio or surrounding states although our supplier can import stone from anywhere across the world as needed. Several of these stone benches were built with left over material.
Design Notes: A well sited garden bench can work as a focal point as well as a place to rest from puling weeds.
stone patio table patio seat wall
Materials: This simple patio table was built using a piece of granite placed on a cut limestone base.
Design Notes: Polished granite looks as good outdoors as it does indoors and stone patio furniture will never rust or end up in the neighbor's yard.

Materials: Unilock Brussels Dimensionals and Indiana limestone pier caps were used to make this seat wall.
Design Notes: A seat wall can help define an outdoor living space while providing some overflow seating. The capped pillars also offer a place to set drinks and hors d'oeuvres.

Materials: Salvaged clay pavers.
Design Notes: This fire pit is built into a raised patio designed by the client.
Materials: I had Lang Stone split down a limestone slab to use as seating around this stone fire pit built of Ottawa Buff stone.
Design: Always site your fire ring a safe distance from your landscaping.

stone fire pit

concrete block fire ring
Notes: Close to 10 tons of limestone slabs were used for this rustic fire ring. Materials: Unilock Roman Stack was used to make this 6 foot fire ring.
Design notes: Always site the fire pit a safe distance from any mulch.
cedar trellis

pergola

Notes: This cedar trellis hung on treated posts hides a large pump and other utilities for a Koi pond. Materials: Treated lumber and timbers.
Design Notes: This pergola offers a shady spot to relax.
sandstone planter sandstone planter

Materials: Hollowed out sandstone slabs & reclaimed barn stone. Limestone and granite can be used as well.
Design Notes: Stone planters tend to be heavy so spend some time planning and place them once, where they will not have to be moved often. They work well for herb gardens as well as annual plantings. As with any planter, be sure to keep the drainage holes clear with some gravel or shards from the clay pots that did not survive last winter.

sushi for lunch winter runnoff
Materials: The gold fish pool above was built using leftover stone, plants and pond supplies. The creek to the right was built with a combination of existing stone on site as well as some new limestone slabs and flagging. A large, flat piece was saved out for a foot bridge across the creek.
Design Notes: As with any other piece in the garden a water feature should serve a purpose other than just the visual and audio aesthetic. The fish pond doubles as a wading pool for the dog and the creek to the right contains storm water runoff as well as outflow from a geothermal system.
