Materials - Bluestone slabs were
used to build the lower retaining wall and steps. Arlington Blue-vein
was used for the knee wall. Ohio quarried stone blends in well with older gardens and costs less than stone from out of state.
Design - The goal for this project was to lessen the
grade of the back yard and provide access to the stream behind
this Upper Arlington Home. All of the excavated soil was used
for grading behind the tiered retaining walls.

Materials - Ottawa Buff wall stone,
solid limestone steps, Ottawa Buff flagstone and tumbled
pavers were used to build this backyard patio garden. New sod was installed after the retaining walls and patios were built.
Design - This terraced retaining wall was cut into
a hill on the back side of this Muirfield house to increase usable
space in the back yard and provide planting niches for annuals
and perennials. It was the client's idea to set the flagstone in
the lawn which adds some visual interest from the deck while also protecting
the lawn from foot traffic.

Materials - Woodstock Thin irregular
sandstone can be used for small retaining walls or garden walls
as well as flatwork such as pathways and walkways.
Design - This garden wall replaced a brick edging that
was no longer keeping the mulch out of the lawn.

Materials - Unilock Brussels Dimensionals were
laid in a random pattern. This tumbled concrete block is good
for building retaining walls under 3' tall and is just large enough
to have an address marker sandblasted onto it.
Design - This retaining wall, planting box system replaced
some deteriorated timbers in the same basic design.

Materials - Salt Creek Blue stone slabs quarried in Ohio. Various types of drought tolerant groundcover and spreading perennials and shrubs such as Dianthus, Campanula, Thyme, Creeping Phlox, and Blue Rug Juniper.
Design - In addition to holding back the existing grade this dry stacked retaining wall purposely laid with voids large enough to allow room for plantings will serve a second purpose as a rock garden or living retaining wall. |

Materials - Pre-split 3"-5" Ottawa Buff wall stone.
Design - A terraced garden is a practical way to handle a steep lot common to some central Ohio neighborhoods such as Clintonville. This series of dry stack retaining walls replaced the existing system of failed masonry and timbers following the same basic design. Additional PVC drain tile and gravel backfill was used to improve drainage. |
